About
As a third generation Chicana raised in El Sereno, an East Los Angeles barrio, my personal education began outside of the classroom and inside the community. From being pulled by my mother in a red radio flyer wagon as a child to protest Proposition 187, a landmark ballot initiative that sought to outlaw illegal immigrant’s access to social services, to holding up anti-Proposition 209 signs with my younger brother in an effort to save affirmative action and keep the hope of higher education alive, I witnessed social policies and government practices first-hand. Because of these experiences, I want to write about Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de la Porciúncula so that public policies and urban planning are transperant agents of inclusive community empowerment that replicate the artistic vibrancy and cultural legacy of all Angelenos.
